let me let’s go back to the beginning of the gong how did this gong come into our lives the way it is today and how can we use it the most effectively so let’s go back through the ages where did gongs come from I’m not going to spend a lot of time on history but I want to tell you how gongs were originally used and how they evolved over time to we’re getting to this now this new world of sound healing and energy work and transformation which is a somewhat recent but also very ancient practice of The Gong so primarily when
you think of the gongs what what were the first gongs used what were they used for primarily for rituals uh for ceremonies uh for initiations and life transitions know the gong itself has such a powerful voice that it kind of opened up the whole space for someone it’s like almost like the voice of God when the gong was struck so it’s much like let the ritual begin here’s our sacred ceremony uh you are going through a time in your life of initiation you know you’re coming into priesthood or adulthood or whatever it may be or maybe
you’re transitioning maybe this is like uh on your way out this is the life this ending the gong helps you transition to the next realm so this is a such a powerful use of The Gong in this very high level way of ceremony and ritual now the other way it was used early on which may be surprising to some of you it was used for communication uh it was used a lot in some of the Tibetan monasteries through to communicate with the other monks on other the other monasteries even the mountain away they play the gong to
almost to to share and to give messages they would play the gong sometimes at the uh at the edge of the ocean to communicate with the boats that Out on the Ocean because the gong traveled so far the sound so primarily the gong’s voice was so strong it was the excellent Communicator people listen to it and when you hear the gong your attention is focused so it communicates very well in that way now obviously another way the gong playing evolved was when it started being used in religious ceremonies
spiritual purposes uh using it in the temples because it seems like that sound of the gong was the closest sound we could get to that Universal Cosmic sound that was common to all Human Experience so it it again it was speaking to us but now in that place of of deep realization of our origins The Gong said the gong kind of takes you back to who you were before you became you that the beginning now over time it evolved again and people started to play the gong uh for musical reasons uh particularly in
China and the uh the Chinese operas the gongs were used a lot to Signal the change of the scenes or the entry of a new character uh it was very much it was dramatized in theater in the Western World with the musicians started to bring composers started to bring the gong into their realm in about the 18th and 19th centuries so the Western people started hear the gong as part of symphonic compositions in that way so for music and then of course later for those of you who are in the 60s and 70s the gong came in with a lot of the
rock and roll bands at the time and so the new age sound or the sound of Consciousness started to come back into music with the gong but it was being played primarily though in this case for musical effect then something very interesting happened around the late 1960s early 1970s the gong was starting to be discovered by the yogis by people who are doing yoga and in particular Kundalini Yoga and the gong was often times started to be played now in certain yoga classes for meditation and for the practices of yoga so now we see
the sound of gong being integrated into the Western world and the Eastern world to these practices of yoga and meditation and the gong is played differently it’s played differently for yoga it’s played differently for meditation it’s played different for ceremonies now many of us were introduced to gong I think probably in a state of relaxation you go to a sound healing event or maybe a yoga class maybe a festival and all of a sudden people are just lying down and someone’s playing a gong or playing lots of gongs and at the
end of that we go wow I just feel so transformed but I feel super relaxed so the gong was now being played uh to create a deep sense of relaxation by readjusting the nervous system and for many people today really in our world they think of The Gong as they’ve heard it is mostly in that context of relaxation now we get into the sound healing work with the gong now we’re starting to take it to a different level now we’re having an intentionality of playing the gong not just to relax people or when you’re doing a meditation
but how do you play the gong in a way to create healing in all levels how do you play it differently for that purpose?
